Beyond Ground Zero
After
9-11, Chinese workers face a bleak new reality marked by mass unemployment,
environmental contamination, increased health risks and government deception
in an increasingly racist and anti-poor, anti-immigrant climate. CSWA
immediately responded to the needs of over 10,000 garment workers left
jobless, uninsured and locked out of disaster relief and formed Beyond
Ground Zero, a network of organizations working in low income communities
to hold government accountable. We organized over 4,000 Lover Manhattan
workers in two marches in New York City and Washington D.C. to fight against
discriminary relief practices and to address the disturbing range of illnesses
-- from pneumonia to unexplained bleeding -- that has surged since the
WTC attacks. We continue to organize in a hostile environment and believe
that holding government accountable and raising a voice of dissent on
domestic issues on American soil is key in building a just and peaceful
world.
